undertake a project of restoration on a classic Italian supercar which epitimises the very essence of the 1970’s. The Maserati Merak SS was a world class performance automobile of its time and has an air of elegance and true class about it which is timeless. The Maserati Merak SS, a fine example of a mid-engined Giugiaro designed 70’s supercar, was first produced in 1975. Only 652 were made until production of the SS stopped in 1982. There were only 231 cars produced during this period for the UK market with right hand drive. In 1976 the total number of cars produced was 139 and it is not known the precise number which came to the UK. The mid car engine produced horsepower of 220 hp and achieved a top speed of 152 mph . This old treasure has been sadly neglected in recent years and has been laid up in an old farm building. It appears that the engine was removed and dismantled for reasons unknown and the car was put to one side and forgotten about. More recently it has been moved outside and exposed to the elements and was in a very sorry state when we found her. See the pictures below and there is one as we found her on a private estate still bearing a 1983 tax disc! After a jolly good clean and a bit of tender loving care, she has been brought back to give us a glimpse of her former glory. There is a lot of work to fully restore her but it is clear to see that there is massive potential here. Make no mistake a lot of man hours would be needed to bring her up to scratch but it is very achievable ideal for spares. I bought this with a friend and it was our intention to restore the car but I`ve moved away and it`s been left up to him to decide what he wants to do with it. He really can`t manage it on his own so we`ve decided to sell it. I went up to Darlington recently and loosely assembled the engine to check all the parts were there and to keep everything together as the previous owner had boxed everything up. The engine has now been dismantled again and wrapped carefully in clingfilm. The dashboard is complete and intact with all the original clocks and gauges, it even has a radio cassette. The seats, carpets and door panels have sadly not fared well at all and would seem to be beyond help. The indicator stalk is broken. This should be seen as a serious project and is not a task for the fainthearted, more a labour of love for someone with true dedication and the ability to undertake a full and sympathetic restoration. The engine is a V-6 four overhead camshaft engine with two valves per cylinder 2965 cc engine, fed by three twin-choke downdraught Weber 44DCNF carburettors. All complete. The engine had been totally stripped and all the parts were bagged when we accquired it. Although we have assembled the engine to check all the major parts and nothing obvious was missing except an engine mounting (engine is again dismantled and wrapped). The gearbox is complete and hasn’t been stripped down. The mileage showing is 31,000 but it could be 131,000 . The V5 is present and registered in my friends name with his home address in Darlington. There is a information manual included (Copy). There is a full set of keys for the locking fuel cap and door/ignition. We welcome you to view before bidding as it is so difficult to describe accurately. The new owner can have all our photos on a cd as found then as we start to assemble the engine and clean the body we took more pictures. The bores appear to be in good condition with little or no wear. The rear exhaust box is missing also one engine mounting.
