On each occasion I was asked what I had been driving recently. "The new Maserati," I replied. Blank stare, followed by the deflating question, "What's that?" My explanation that it was an Italian supercar owned by Ferrari helped to restore the balance, but the simplest thing would have been to drive past in one. The new 4200 Coupé makes its intentions clear the moment you set eyes on it, all the more so thanks to the small but significant styling changes that have been introduced since this car replaced the 3200 GT (in particular a more elegant, if less adventurous, treatment of the rear lights). Where the 3200 GT had a turbocharged 3.2-litre engine, the new car does away with the blower but gains a full litre in capacity. A 4.2 whose rev-counter doesn't turn red until 7600rpm is obviously something pretty special, and indeed this unit produces a thumping 390bhp at full chat. In the process it makes a classically Italian-sounding V8 scream, though current noise regulations mean that it does not produce as many decibels as you feel it should. That engine dominates the driving experience. On one quick getaway with the manual transmission version known as the GT (we'll come to the Cambiocorsa alternative in a minute) the traction control had to work hard to quell wheelspin. Fair enough. Same again when I changed into second. Okay. A shift into third, and the electronics were still required to keep everything under control. Blimey. Not having a race circuit available, I decided not to look for whatever switch you press to disable the traction control system - visions of departing backwards through the nearest hedge were already springing to mind. A Split Personality Basically, the chassis can't handle the power. The apparent reason for this is that the 4200's suspension has been set up for comfort rather than handling. The car has two clashing personalities: part of it thinks it's an easy-going cruiser, and part of it thinks it's a racer. It's down to the driver to find a compromise between the two. There's also a third element to make life even more difficult. The manual gearbox - obviously a very beefy piece of kit, to cope with all the torque - has a particularly clumsy shift quality, not helped by exceptionally stiff springing towards the centre of the gate. As a result it takes a long time to complete a change between any two of the six gears, which wouldn't be so much of a problem except that all those gears are, in terms of their ratios, very close together. Unless you keep squeezing the throttle during each change to keep the revs up, the engine speed falls away while you're manhandling the gear lever, and then shoots back up again when you re-engage the clutch. You can make much smoother progress without losing any noticeable time if you skip gears. I found first, second, fourth, sixth to be a perfectly adequate sequence. Since the engine produces storming amounts of power from 2000rpm to that 7600 red line, you don't compromise the performance by doing this, and I felt that the use of a close-ratio six-speed was more useful in marketing terms than it would be in any road driving situation. Five more widely-spaced gears would do the job just as well, if not better, though it wouldn't sound so good in a pub conversation. Of course, you could also go for the Cambiocorsa transmission, which is still a manual but with electronic control of the gear changing and clutch. Two sensibly sized and well positioned levers on the steering wheel allow you to flick through the gears, and the speed of the change is determined by how hard you are pressing the throttle pedal at the time. Too Busy To Notice Like all systems of this type (see Alfa Romeo and Mercedes for further evidence) there is a basic problem with normal-speed changes. In a car with manual transmission, the car is coasting all the time your foot is on the clutch, but you don't notice this because you're busy with the gear lever. The same process performed by the Cambiocorsa seems to take forever because you're sitting there waiting for it all to happen. This isn't so bad if you happen to be accelerating flat-out, because the changes are much quicker than normal, but if you're just going reasonably quickly what you feel is a series of lurches in what should be a seamless period of acceleration. One or two colleagues have reported that the effect can sometimes be literally nauseating. On the other hand, the physical effort required with the Cambiocorsa is a great deal less than with the GT, especially if you switch to automatic mode and let it decide when to do the gear changing. In any kind of slow driving (which in Maserati terms is what you will be doing most of the time), and particularly in town, the Cambiocorsa is immeasurably easier to drive. Because of this, I'd say that the Cambiocorsa is the better car, though with considerable reservations. Needless to say, the Maserati in both its forms is very well-equipped and delightfully comfortable to drive. The only exception to this is the fact that the foot rest on the GT is positioned level with the top of the clutch pedal travel, which feels a little strange until you get used to it. There is lots of room in the front, and although the rear is significantly more cramped it is no worse in this respect than most small hatchbacks. I loved the 3200 GT we tested a couple of years ago and in some ways I still prefer it, partly because it was easier to drive slowly - you could potter around quite happily with the turbo at idle, whereas the 4200 always seems to be straining at the leash. But the 4200 is the better car, and will probably be much cheaper to run now that Maserati has slashed the previously alarming servicing costs. Price: GT £59,950, Cambiocorsa £62,950 Capacity: 4244cc Power: 390bhp 0-62mph: 4.9 seconds Maximum speed: 177mph Economy: 21.7mpg extra urban, 15.2mpg combined CO2 Emissions: 430g/km Insurance: Group 20 Maserati figures (GT and Cambiocorsa figures are identical other than price.) Second opinion: The Italdesign/Giugiaro styling is most impressive - overall and in detail, the Coupé has the appeal of a genuine Italian GT car. And the interior matches it, with leather trim all over the shop, a high standard of fit and finish, and, once again, the finest fascia-mounted clock in the business. Tremendous acceleration here with, for me, a sufficiently flexible engine. I'm happy to see the back of the turbocharged version. As with the Spyder, I didn't think either of the transmission options was up to the rest of the car. The snag about the Cambiocorsa is indeed this business of the cog-swapping being lightning quick, but the automatic clutch operation causing a hesitation at every change. I strongly resent the suggestion (yes, it was me) that a passenger found my driving nauseating. After all, he said he felt "just a little queasy", and was kind enough to suggest it possibly wasn't the way I was motoring on winding hill roads, but had to do with being pivoted forward and back at every gear change. It's depressing to know that a CARkeys colleague consorts with people who haven't heard of Maserati. Peasants. The car's a classic, and it was good to hear that Maserati will be back on the circuits soon. Ross Finlay. Giorgetto Giugiaro The Maserati Coupé and Spyder are grand tourers[1][2] produced by Italian automaker Maserati from 2002 to 2007. They have now been replaced by the GranTurismo.[3] The two nameplates refer to the four-seater coupé and two-seater roadster versions, respectively. Both models were based on the 3200 GT,[4][5] which was sold in Europe, but not in the United States. The Coupé and Spyder are both commonly referred to as the 4200 GT,[6][7] which is an evolution of the prior model name and a reference to the increase in engine displacement from 3.2 L (3217 cc) to 4.2 L (4244 cc).[8]
The Spyder was first unveiled to the public at the 2001 Frankfurt Auto Show with the Coupé's debut following shortly thereafter at the 2002 Detroit Auto Show.[9] Sales in the United States began in March 2002 for the Spyder and in May for the Coupé.[10] The release of the Spyder heralded Maserati's return to the North American market after an 11 year hiatus. Almost as soon as it was introduced, the Spyder was selected by Forbes as the Best GT for 2001.[2]
The Coupé and Spyder were designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro of ItalDesign, who also designed the Maserati Ghibli.[11] The cars were built at the Viale Ciro Menotti plant in Modena, Italy. Contents 1 Design

8 External links [edit] Design Maserati Coupé The Maserati Coupé is a true four-seater capable of comfortably seating two adults in the back.[6][12] It has a wheelbase of 104.7 inches (2,660 mm) which is about three inches longer than a Jaguar XKR and twelve inches (305 mm) longer than a 996 Series Porsche 911.[4] Overall vehicle length is 178.1 inches (4,520 mm), width is 71.7 inches (1,820 mm), and height is 51.4 inches (1,310 mm). Total curb weight is 3,700 pounds (1,700 kg).[4]
The Maserati Spyder is a soft-top convertible that is electronically operated by a pushbutton on the center console. The top automatically stows beneath a hard cover that sits flush with the body in front of the trunk. Both deployment and stowage of the top takes about 30 seconds.[13] Arch-type roll bars are provided behind each seat. The Spyder's 96.1-inch (2,440 mm) wheelbase is 8.6 inches (220 mm) shorter than the Coupé's. Overall length is 169.4 inches (4,300 mm), width 71.7 inches (1,820 mm), and height 51.4 inches (1,310 mm). Curb weight is 3,792 pounds (1,720 kg).[14]
[edit] Equipment
The Maserati Coupé and Spyder utilize the same vehicle systems – engine, transmission, suspension, and interior driver and front passenger controls and safety equipment. Their performance specifications are almost identical, with some reviewers claiming that the Coupé has better performance due to its lesser weight and more rigid body structure,[1] while others measured faster performance from the Spyder.[4] Both models came standard with 18 inch alloy wheels that originally had a 15-spoke design, but after 2003 most buyers chose the optional 7-spoke sport wheels which became standard by 2005.[15] Maserati offered sixteen exterior colors, ten shades of leather interior[16] along with the ability to select among colors for various interior details such as the piping and stitching used.[17] Five colors for the Spyder's convertible top were also offered.[16]
[edit] Engine Maserati V8 Engine Both models utilize the shared platform based Ferrari/Maserati 4244 cc engine which develops 390 hp (291 kW; 395 PS) at 7000 rpm with a peak torque of 333 foot-pounds force (451.5 N·m) at 4500 rpm.[18]
Significant changes from the prior 3200 GT engine were the larger displacement resulting from an increased cylinder bore diameter and the move to a naturally aspirated intake that replaced the twin-turbo approach Maserati had used for the previous 20 years, fundamentally because the powertrain is now Ferrari based.[19][20] The engine operates at a compression ratio of 11.1:1 with the cylinders configured in a 90° V8. The cylinder bore diameter is 92 millimetres (3.62 in) and piston stroke length is 80 millimetres (3.15 in).[18] The engine shares many of the design features of modern racing engines, including dry sump lubrication, a pump assembly located outside the crankcase, and four valves per cylinder.[21] The 32-valve DOHC utilizes chain-driven, twin-overhead camshafts that provide valve actuation in less than 0.15 seconds, with the intake cams being controlled by variable valve timing.[22] The crankcase and cylinder heads are made from an aluminum and silicon alloy, giving the engine a relatively light weight of 405 pounds (184 kg).[1]
[edit] Transmission
The manual transmission is a six-speed that was available either as a GT (manual stick shift) or CC (Cambiocorsa) using paddle shifters. The GT version utilizes a foot operated clutch, whereas the Cambiocorsa (Italian, meaning "race change")[23][24] is a electrohydraulic manual transmission that uses a Formula One-type gearbox with hydraulic operation and electronic management operated by F1-style paddles behind the steering wheel.[25] The system allows the driver to choose between four different operating modes: Normal, Sport, Auto and Low Grip. Each of these programs is selected by means of console-mounted buttons, corresponding to different types of operating mode. By switching between the Normal and Sport modes, the driver can select between different electronic stability control settings and, if installed, different active suspension settings.[25] The Normal mode provides a more comfortable ride, whereas the Sport mode stiffens up the suspension and provides fast gear shifts of around a quarter of a second.[23][26] Automatic mode electronically handles shifting of the transmission, but allows the driver to rapidly revert to manual using the F1-style paddles.[25] The Low Grip, or Ice mode, allows for smooth starting and gear changes on snow and ice.
The transmission gearbox is located at the rear of the vehicle and is integrated in with the differential. This gives both the Coupé and Spyder a 48/52% weight distribution between the front and rear axles.[25]
[edit] Suspension
The Maserati Coupé and Spyder both have a light alloy double wishbone suspension. The rear suspension is fitted with a toe-in regulator bar which enhances the precision of the drive train and provides balanced cornering. The front suspension layout incorporates “anti-dive” features to prevent nose-diving when braking. The suspension system is completed by front and rear anti-roll bars.[27][28]
Perhaps the most highly-regarded option is a computer-controlled suspension damping system called "Skyhook".[29] This adaptive damping system uses coil-over shock absorbers and a set of six accelerometers that continually monitor the movement of the wheels and car body and transmits this information to a control unit.[30] The vehicle's computer analyzes this data and coordinates it with the Cambiocorsa transmission and other Maserati safety systems. Skyhook then calculates, and recalculates, the data at least 40 times per second and instantaneously adjusts each shock absorber accordingly.[31] When placed in the Sport mode, the suspension firms up for better cornering.
[edit] Safety
Both vehicles are equipped with front and side driver and passenger airbags as well as seat belt pre-tensioners.[32] Driving stability is provided by Maserati Stability Program (MSP) which became standard on the 2004 models and controls the engine and brakes to help the driver control the vehicle in extreme driving situations.[33] The MSP system integrates four different vehicle systems - the anti-slip regulation traction control (ASR), the motor spin regulation (MSR), electronic brake force distribution (EBD), and anti-lock braking system (ABS).[33][34] The wheels employ a high-performance Brembo braking system with light alloy four-piston calipers and cross-drilled large ventilating discs.[35]
[edit] Interior
The Coupé and Spyder came standard with an information center that combines audio and climate controls.[36] An optional GPS navigation system and hands-free GSM phone were also available as options integrated into the info center.[37][38] Additional optional equipment includes xenon headlights, upgraded audio system and CD changer, electrochromic rear view mirror, rear parking sensors, seat heaters, and cruise control.[39] Various interior trim packages were offered, including a leather headliner featuring a grosgrain pattern, and either a carbon fiber kit or Briar wood kit sporting wood portions of the steering wheel, door trim, and shifter.[17] Purchasers could even order custom Maserati luggage, made to match their car's interiors.[40]
[edit] GranSport 2006 GranSport Spyder The Maserati GranSport is a modified version of the Coupé and Spyder that was first unveiled at the 2004 Geneva Motor Show.[41] It is equipped with aerodynamic body cladding, a chrome mesh grille, carbon fiber interior trim, and special 19-inch (480 mm) wheels. It uses the Skyhook active suspension, with a 0.4 inch (10 mm) lower ride height, and the Cambiocorsa transmission is recalibrated for quicker shifts. The exhaust is also specially tuned to "growl" on start-up and full throttle.[42]
It is powered by the same 4244 cc, 90° V8 petrol engine used on the Coupé and Spyder. However, the engine develops 395 hp (295 kW; 400 PS) at 7000 rpm due primarily to a different exhaust system and improvements on the intake manifolds and valve seats.[43] A six-speed paddle shift transmission comes as standard. The car is 178.1 inches (4,520 mm) long, 71.7 inches (1,820 mm) wide, 51.0 inches (1,300 mm) high and weighs 3,704 pounds (1,680.1 kg).[44]
[edit] Trofeo
The Maserati Trofeo is a racing version of the Coupé that was introduced in 2003. It utilizes the stock engine that provides 413 brake horsepower (308.0 kW) due to a revised engine mapping and a modified free-flowing exhaust that uses a baffle-free muffler.[45][46] Vehicle weight was reduced by 550 pounds (249.5 kg) as a result of many stock components being stripped out: soundproofing, air conditioning, and the leather interior were left out,[45] with the regular seats being replaced by racing seats.[46] Carbon-fiber doors and hood replace the street car's steel components, and plexiglass replaces the side window glass.[45] The result is a zero to 60 miles per hour (97 km/h) time of 4.0 seconds. A Trofeo racing series was organized for enthusiasts, with a per-race rental charge of about $20,000.[46]
A Trofeo Light (or simply the Maserati Light) was also developed for use in various national and international racing series, including the Italian GT Championship, Rolex Sports Car Series, and FIA GT3 European Championship.
[edit] Special editions 2005 Coupe CC with Vintage package The Maserati Coupé and Spyder special editions are primarily exterior trim packages that were only offered for certain model years or on a limited number of vehicles. They include: 2005 Spyder 90th Anniversary[32][47]
2006 Gransport LE[48]
2006 Gransport MC Victory[49][50] Also, in 2004, a Vintage trim package was introduced. It includes chrome air-exhaust vents in the front fenders, a new polished wheel design, silver-finished brake calipers, and chrome door handles.[13]
A 2004 Coupé 90th Anniversary edition was announced,[51][52] but apparently never produced.
The MC Victory edition features carbon fiber body panels and interior trim, and was unveiled at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show to celebrate the racing success of the Maserati MC12.[50][53]
