| | Maserati Zagato Spyder. Classic sports convertible / Lamborghini / Ferrari .
1992 (J) 2.8 black Maserati Zagato Spyder I have owned the car for eleven years and have had some very special moments with it. It lived mostly in Spain ...> for those eleven years and I covered 12,000 miles in it. I am now back in the UK full time and it rarely gets driven anymore so I have decided to sell. I have the bigger bills that I kept during my ownership totalling £8,700, usually spent with a well known London based specialist. It has been kept in perfect mechanical order and has been surprisingly reliable. It broke down on me once about 8 years ago with a jammed thermostat but that is it, pretty remarkable for this type of car. Another surprise is that I have never once had to put any oil in it between services and I used to check it regularly. It also had £1,950.00 spent on bodywork in 2000 by the previous owner but it is now bubbling rust again under the paint in various places. The door bottom has rust bubbles. The front wing bottom at the front has a small area of rust under the paint that has actually cracked the paint and is lifting it, the frame below the windscreen has rust raising the paint and few cracks as well. There are some other small bubbles low down around the car. The interior seats are very poor and need recovering but the rest of the interior is pretty good. It has done 81792 miles, everything is still very tight and it goes like shit of a shovel and sounds even faster. On start up after not being used for a few weeks it blows out smoke from one pair of exhausts, the smoke clears after a few minutes warm up and it does not do it while the car is being driven, it does not do it at all if the car is used regularly. It has always done this since I have owned it and does not affect performance or anything. I have talked to a couple of honest mechanics about it and they both said it is nothing to worry about. It has various other things that need doing. The hood has two small tears and a faded patch, the wheels have oxidation and the handbrakes wooden handle is loose. Electrics: The air conditioning LCD electronic control panel does not work, the windscreen wipers seem to have a mind of their own and the windows are not in a hurry to go up or down, but eventually get there. This is a late model just before the Ghibli mk2 got released with its exhausts coming through the bumper and not hanging under it, it looks much neater. It has lots of history including the original receipt of purchase and the owners manual and a quality dust cover. I would sum up this car as a great base for a drivable project with nothing requiring urgent attention and they are finally increasing in value now, so a good investment for the future. A very good looking, exciting and noisy convertible. I have a spare fuse box and spare air conditioning control panel. I got told that it is likely to be either one of these that is stopping the air conditioning from working but I never got around to having them fitted. The MOT runs out on February 11th but it should sail through a new one as I have done, as of the date of this advert placement, precisely 108 miles since the last MOT. The last major service and change of timing belt was carried out in February 2008 at 78,324 miles. I have only had oil changes and any remedial work required to get it through its MOTS since. I read in a car magazine that these cars can be easily maintained and should be well within the limits of a competent home mechanic as apparently, there is nothing complicated on it. So if you are that way inclined, you will not get big maintenance bills. There is a good support network of reasonably priced spares as the base car that Zagato used is a 222E which shared its parts with various models from the Biturbo range of which they made loads. I will consider offers near £6,500 please. X

Giorgetto Giugiaro The Maserati Coupé and Spyder are grand tourers[1][2] produced by Italian automaker Maserati from 2002 to 2007. They have now been replaced by the GranTurismo.[3] The two nameplates refer to the four-seater coupé and two-seater roadster versions, respectively. Both models were based on the 3200 GT,[4][5] which was sold in Europe, but not in the United States. The Coupé and Spyder are both commonly referred to as the 4200 GT,[6][7] which is an evolution of the prior model name and a reference to the increase in engine displacement from 3.2 L (3217 cc) to 4.2 L (4244 cc).[8]
The Spyder was first unveiled to the public at the 2001 Frankfurt Auto Show with the Coupé's debut following shortly thereafter at the 2002 Detroit Auto Show.[9] Sales in the United States began in March 2002 for the Spyder and in May for the Coupé.[10] The release of the Spyder heralded Maserati's return to the North American market after an 11 year hiatus. Almost as soon as it was introduced, the Spyder was selected by Forbes as the Best GT for 2001.[2]
The Coupé and Spyder were designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro of ItalDesign, who also designed the Maserati Ghibli.[11] The cars were built at the Viale Ciro Menotti plant in Modena, Italy. Contents 1 Design

8 External links [edit] Design Maserati Coupé The Maserati Coupé is a true four-seater capable of comfortably seating two adults in the back.[6][12] It has a wheelbase of 104.7 inches (2,660 mm) which is about three inches longer than a Jaguar XKR and twelve inches (305 mm) longer than a 996 Series Porsche 911.[4] Overall vehicle length is 178.1 inches (4,520 mm), width is 71.7 inches (1,820 mm), and height is 51.4 inches (1,310 mm). Total curb weight is 3,700 pounds (1,700 kg).[4]
The Maserati Spyder is a soft-top convertible that is electronically operated by a pushbutton on the center console. The top automatically stows beneath a hard cover that sits flush with the body in front of the trunk. Both deployment and stowage of the top takes about 30 seconds.[13] Arch-type roll bars are provided behind each seat. The Spyder's 96.1-inch (2,440 mm) wheelbase is 8.6 inches (220 mm) shorter than the Coupé's. Overall length is 169.4 inches (4,300 mm), width 71.7 inches (1,820 mm), and height 51.4 inches (1,310 mm). Curb weight is 3,792 pounds (1,720 kg).[14]
[edit] Equipment
The Maserati Coupé and Spyder utilize the same vehicle systems – engine, transmission, suspension, and interior driver and front passenger controls and safety equipment. Their performance specifications are almost identical, with some reviewers claiming that the Coupé has better performance due to its lesser weight and more rigid body structure,[1] while others measured faster performance from the Spyder.[4] Both models came standard with 18 inch alloy wheels that originally had a 15-spoke design, but after 2003 most buyers chose the optional 7-spoke sport wheels which became standard by 2005.[15] Maserati offered sixteen exterior colors, ten shades of leather interior[16] along with the ability to select among colors for various interior details such as the piping and stitching used.[17] Five colors for the Spyder's convertible top were also offered.[16]
[edit] Engine Maserati V8 Engine Both models utilize the shared platform based Ferrari/Maserati 4244 cc engine which develops 390 hp (291 kW; 395 PS) at 7000 rpm with a peak torque of 333 foot-pounds force (451.5 N·m) at 4500 rpm.[18]
Significant changes from the prior 3200 GT engine were the larger displacement resulting from an increased cylinder bore diameter and the move to a naturally aspirated intake that replaced the twin-turbo approach Maserati had used for the previous 20 years, fundamentally because the powertrain is now Ferrari based.[19][20] The engine operates at a compression ratio of 11.1:1 with the cylinders configured in a 90° V8. The cylinder bore diameter is 92 millimetres (3.62 in) and piston stroke length is 80 millimetres (3.15 in).[18] The engine shares many of the design features of modern racing engines, including dry sump lubrication, a pump assembly located outside the crankcase, and four valves per cylinder.[21] The 32-valve DOHC utilizes chain-driven, twin-overhead camshafts that provide valve actuation in less than 0.15 seconds, with the intake cams being controlled by variable valve timing.[22] The crankcase and cylinder heads are made from an aluminum and silicon alloy, giving the engine a relatively light weight of 405 pounds (184 kg).[1]
[edit] Transmission
The manual transmission is a six-speed that was available either as a GT (manual stick shift) or CC (Cambiocorsa) using paddle shifters. The GT version utilizes a foot operated clutch, whereas the Cambiocorsa (Italian, meaning "race change")[23][24] is a electrohydraulic manual transmission that uses a Formula One-type gearbox with hydraulic operation and electronic management operated by F1-style paddles behind the steering wheel.[25] The system allows the driver to choose between four different operating modes: Normal, Sport, Auto and Low Grip. Each of these programs is selected by means of console-mounted buttons, corresponding to different types of operating mode. By switching between the Normal and Sport modes, the driver can select between different electronic stability control settings and, if installed, different active suspension settings.[25] The Normal mode provides a more comfortable ride, whereas the Sport mode stiffens up the suspension and provides fast gear shifts of around a quarter of a second.[23][26] Automatic mode electronically handles shifting of the transmission, but allows the driver to rapidly revert to manual using the F1-style paddles.[25] The Low Grip, or Ice mode, allows for smooth starting and gear changes on snow and ice.
The transmission gearbox is located at the rear of the vehicle and is integrated in with the differential. This gives both the Coupé and Spyder a 48/52% weight distribution between the front and rear axles.[25]
[edit] Suspension
The Maserati Coupé and Spyder both have a light alloy double wishbone suspension. The rear suspension is fitted with a toe-in regulator bar which enhances the precision of the drive train and provides balanced cornering. The front suspension layout incorporates “anti-dive” features to prevent nose-diving when braking. The suspension system is completed by front and rear anti-roll bars.[27][28]
Perhaps the most highly-regarded option is a computer-controlled suspension damping system called "Skyhook".[29] This adaptive damping system uses coil-over shock absorbers and a set of six accelerometers that continually monitor the movement of the wheels and car body and transmits this information to a control unit.[30] The vehicle's computer analyzes this data and coordinates it with the Cambiocorsa transmission and other Maserati safety systems. Skyhook then calculates, and recalculates, the data at least 40 times per second and instantaneously adjusts each shock absorber accordingly.[31] When placed in the Sport mode, the suspension firms up for better cornering.
[edit] Safety
Both vehicles are equipped with front and side driver and passenger airbags as well as seat belt pre-tensioners.[32] Driving stability is provided by Maserati Stability Program (MSP) which became standard on the 2004 models and controls the engine and brakes to help the driver control the vehicle in extreme driving situations.[33] The MSP system integrates four different vehicle systems - the anti-slip regulation traction control (ASR), the motor spin regulation (MSR), electronic brake force distribution (EBD), and anti-lock braking system (ABS).[33][34] The wheels employ a high-performance Brembo braking system with light alloy four-piston calipers and cross-drilled large ventilating discs.[35]
[edit] Interior
The Coupé and Spyder came standard with an information center that combines audio and climate controls.[36] An optional GPS navigation system and hands-free GSM phone were also available as options integrated into the info center.[37][38] Additional optional equipment includes xenon headlights, upgraded audio system and CD changer, electrochromic rear view mirror, rear parking sensors, seat heaters, and cruise control.[39] Various interior trim packages were offered, including a leather headliner featuring a grosgrain pattern, and either a carbon fiber kit or Briar wood kit sporting wood portions of the steering wheel, door trim, and shifter.[17] Purchasers could even order custom Maserati luggage, made to match their car's interiors.[40]
[edit] GranSport 2006 GranSport Spyder The Maserati GranSport is a modified version of the Coupé and Spyder that was first unveiled at the 2004 Geneva Motor Show.[41] It is equipped with aerodynamic body cladding, a chrome mesh grille, carbon fiber interior trim, and special 19-inch (480 mm) wheels. It uses the Skyhook active suspension, with a 0.4 inch (10 mm) lower ride height, and the Cambiocorsa transmission is recalibrated for quicker shifts. The exhaust is also specially tuned to "growl" on start-up and full throttle.[42]
It is powered by the same 4244 cc, 90° V8 petrol engine used on the Coupé and Spyder. However, the engine develops 395 hp (295 kW; 400 PS) at 7000 rpm due primarily to a different exhaust system and improvements on the intake manifolds and valve seats.[43] A six-speed paddle shift transmission comes as standard. The car is 178.1 inches (4,520 mm) long, 71.7 inches (1,820 mm) wide, 51.0 inches (1,300 mm) high and weighs 3,704 pounds (1,680.1 kg).[44]
[edit] Trofeo
The Maserati Trofeo is a racing version of the Coupé that was introduced in 2003. It utilizes the stock engine that provides 413 brake horsepower (308.0 kW) due to a revised engine mapping and a modified free-flowing exhaust that uses a baffle-free muffler.[45][46] Vehicle weight was reduced by 550 pounds (249.5 kg) as a result of many stock components being stripped out: soundproofing, air conditioning, and the leather interior were left out,[45] with the regular seats being replaced by racing seats.[46] Carbon-fiber doors and hood replace the street car's steel components, and plexiglass replaces the side window glass.[45] The result is a zero to 60 miles per hour (97 km/h) time of 4.0 seconds. A Trofeo racing series was organized for enthusiasts, with a per-race rental charge of about $20,000.[46]
A Trofeo Light (or simply the Maserati Light) was also developed for use in various national and international racing series, including the Italian GT Championship, Rolex Sports Car Series, and FIA GT3 European Championship.
[edit] Special editions 2005 Coupe CC with Vintage package The Maserati Coupé and Spyder special editions are primarily exterior trim packages that were only offered for certain model years or on a limited number of vehicles. They include: 2005 Spyder 90th Anniversary[32][47]
2006 Gransport LE[48]
2006 Gransport MC Victory[49][50] Also, in 2004, a Vintage trim package was introduced. It includes chrome air-exhaust vents in the front fenders, a new polished wheel design, silver-finished brake calipers, and chrome door handles.[13]
A 2004 Coupé 90th Anniversary edition was announced,[51][52] but apparently never produced.
The MC Victory edition features carbon fiber body panels and interior trim, and was unveiled at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show to celebrate the racing success of the Maserati MC12.[50][53]

I've had the cuddy box lid break (pings open every time you go over a bump), the handbrake has stopped working (I've had some crappy cars in the past but never had anything as simple as a handbrake go wrong!), the reversing sensors just beep constantly but don't actually indicate how far away anything is behind you, ......heated seats have stopped working. But..... What a noise! I've had people fall off the pavement behind me when I've gone past, and people are contantly stopping at my driveway to have a closer look (mostly husbands pointing it out to their uninterested wives - 'but why can't I have one dear?', with wifey looking painfully bored and annoyed as she is missing good shopping time). So, taking in to account the parts that ... more OK, so the Maserati Spyder isn't the best built fast car on the market, but I don't think that's going to be a big surprise to anybody. I've had the cuddy box lid break (pings open every time you go over a bump), the handbrake has stopped working (I've had some crappy cars in the past but never had anything as simple as a handbrake go wrong!), the reversing sensors just beep constantly but don't actually indicate how far away anything is behind you, the clutch makes a funny noise in 1st and the heated seats have stopped working. So, taking in to account the parts that regularly fall off or go wrong, and the astronomical prices that the main dealers charge for servicing (and you have to get a main dealer stamp in the book), the average 14mpg and the worry of leaving it anywhere in public, you would think it's not worth the hassle, but think again. The awesome depreciation means that the earlier models can now be picked up for about the same as a new top end Ford or Volvo, and remember, this is a serious Ferrari engined sports car and a real head turner. If you do go for an early one, don't expect to run it cheaply. Just because it's a good value second hand car, the parts and servicing are in the 'Sports and Prestige' bracket, and no expendibles will last very long.
